Voyage Details

Lake Ontario’s name, thought to be of Iroquoian origin meaning “beautiful lake” or “sparkling water” accurately describes what you can expect to see as you set out on your voyage.

Dates: Monday to Friday, July 17  to July 28, 2023
Time: 10 am – 3:30 pm

Attendance requirement: Sailing voyages are so much fun that you won’t want to skip any. However, note that there is an attendance requirement of at least four (out of ten) voyages to complete this program.

Over ten days, we’ll meet at the yacht club at 10 am.

Every day, after one on-shore activity (activities include program orientation, discussions, etc..) we will set sail from Queen City Yacht Club located on Algonquin Island in the Toronto harbor, and the National Yacht Club. We will confirm your voyage’s location once you complete your application. From there, you, the Captain, and your peers will choose your destination, whether it be a sail around the Toronto Islands or a trip to Humber Bay.

While on the boat, you will take up an ordinary crew member’s roles. You’ll get a chance to take charge of the boat under the Captain’s supervision, and square it when you’re back at the bay.

In addition to sailing training, there will be discussions on the boat to brainstorm and plan your community service project, which you can carry out individually or in a team in your community.

By 3:30 pm, we will return to the same yacht club we departed from.

After the voyages are over, you will be expected to finish at least 50 hours of community service projects in your community and inform us of the results. Upon project completion, you will receive your certificate.

You’ll walk away with:

  • Sailing knowledge and experience
  • An insight on new topics affecting the environment
  • Community service experience*
  • New friendships, great memories and fun stories to tell!

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants are youth aged 12-30 years old who are looking for a meaningful experience to learn, have fun, and serve others.

After you sign up, we will get in touch to make sure you’re on the right voyage so that you make the best of your sailing experience. This would depend on other participants’ age, previous experience with sailing (if any) and other criteria.

Your Investment

All program costs are covered by Canada Service Corps and supporters of Broad Reach Canada. While the program is offered to you free-of-charge, you will be required  to confirm your commitment to completing the overall community service hours following the sailing dates.

To ensure equal access to this wonderful program, we reimburse participants for transportation expenses from home to the port for the ten-day sailing program where needed upon their request.

*Community service hours count towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirement. A certificate of completion of the program from Canada Service Corps and Broad Reach Canada will attest to every participants’ 120 hours of completed community service hours.
